Essity UK plant, which uses hydrogen instead of natural gas to make paper, receives £2.2 million in funding

Essity UK plant, which uses hydrogen instead of natural gas to make paper, receives £2.2 million in funding   The Tawd paper mill in Skelmersdale, UK, owned by Swedish company Essity, will be the first in the UK to produce toilet paper and kitchen tissues using hydrogen energy.   The UK government will provide up to £2.2 million in funding for the trial to help determine the viability of hydrogen as an alternative fuel source.   If successful, the technology could be permanently adopted at the Tawd plant and rolled out to other plants.   Andrew Hearns, director of the project, said: "Sustainability is an important part of our global business strategy. We are committed to reducing our own carbon emissions by 35% by 2030 and achieving net zero emissions by 2050. If the trial is successful, replacing natural gas with low hydrocarbon will significantly reduce Tawd's CO2 emissions, which is an important step in the right direction to help us meet our environmental goals."   Essity is currently the UK's leading TAD(Hot Air Through Drying Technology) tissue manufacturer.   TAD is used to make softer, stronger toilet paper, but the manufacturing process is energy intensive and the company has been looking into "greener" fuels such as biomethane, electricity and biomass.   Hearns added: "Finding an alternative to the natural gas currently used for paper is not easy. But hydrogen has already been successfully trialled at one of our sister plants in Germany and we are delighted that our proposal for the North West trial has won UK government funding."   The trial, which will begin in 2024, will involve replacing burners on drying equipment in order to use this alternative fuel fully efficiently.   Reference Sohu.com

    Principles of using breathable films

    2023-07-17

Principles of using breathable films   1. The air permeability effect is the inherent characteristic of the breathable film, and the structural design of personal hygiene care products is the key.   2. As a waterproof material, the safety (water insulation) of the breathable film is the premise, and only on the premise of ensuring safety can the permeability be talked about.   3. " Relatively wide ", "thin, close-fitting", "relatively closed" type structure and relatively long time use (such as diapers, pads, etc.) of care products, the use of breathable film materials is necessary.   4. Compared with ordinary PE embossed film, breathable film has its inherent shortcomings, so the design of products should be good at avoiding defects and giving play to its strengths. For example, the transverse strength of the breathable film is low, the color is relatively monotonous, and the thermal stability is poor.   5. The final breathable effect is proportional to the actual breathable area of the breathable film. Product design needs to maintain effective ventilation area.   6. The design of the final product should consider the convection of the small environment.   Application of breathable film Breathable film used in diapers, sanitary napkins, medical mattresses, etc., in Europe and the United States and other countries has been a stable demand, and the domestic hygiene materials market will mature with the demands of functionality and comfort, the demand for breathable film space will be more and more large.

Production technology principle of breathable film

    2023-07-15

Production technology principle of breathable film   According to the film making process: the manufacture of micro-porous breathable film can be divided into blowing film method and casting method. According to the drawing process: the film can be divided into unidirectional drawing method, bidirectional drawing method and local drawing method. The following aspects need to be paid attention to in the manufacturing process of breathable film:   1. Selection of raw materials   Resin selection Rigid breathable film needs to choose high density polyethylene. Flexible breathable film needs to choose low density polyethylene. High tensile breathable film needs to choose high strength polyethylene.   Choice of calcium carbonate Surface treatment of calcium carbonate: fluidity, extrusion stability, die orifice coking, pinhole, film mechanical properties, etc. Selection of calcium carbonate particle size: tensile property, moisture permeability, uniformity, work-ability.   The choice of raw materials directly affects the work-ability of the breathable film (such as coking time, extrusion stability, thin film work-ability and pinhole defects, etc.) and physical properties (such as air permeability, water resistance, thermal stability and mechanical properties, etc.). Therefore, suitable for the customer's physical requirements for the film and the matching condition with the processing equipment is the first consideration in the selection of breathable materials.   2. Dehumidification system The high humidity of the raw material is the main reason for the holes in the breathable film and the coking of the T-film, which will seriously affect the production efficiency and product quality of the breathable film. Therefore, the production of breathable film not only requires the dehumidification of raw materials (< 250ppm), but also the transportation of raw materials and flash recovery systems, which should have strict humidity control requirements.   3. Extrusion thickness control Stretching amplifies the deviation of extrusion thickness, so the control of extrusion thickness is a prerequisite for ensuring the thickness uniformity of the final product.   4. Stretch control There are two necessary conditions for the manufacture of breathable film, one is calcium carbonate, and the other is stretching. Therefore, drawing is crucial in the manufacturing process of breathable film. Drawing temperature, drawing ratio, drawing rate and drawing gap are the four elements of the drawing process, and its overall balance will have a great impact on the permeability, mechanical properties, consistency and appearance of the breathable film.   5. Heat treatment The method of heat treatment to restore and relax the rigid polymer chain segment after stretching is a necessary means to improve the stability of the breathable film material in the later proces...

  • Action mechanism of breathable film

    Action mechanism of breathable film

    2023-07-13

Action mechanism of breathable film   When the water vapor concentration on one side of the thin film is greater than the other side of the thin film, a humidity gradient pressure difference is formed. This provides the basic conditions for gas convection, and due to the formation of convection, the humidity environment on both sides of the thin film tends to be relatively balanced.   The breathable film is used as a waterproof film, which has a barrier effect on the liquid, because of the many paths in the thin film, the zigzagging channel formed by it has a large "length to diameter ratio" (L/D) value, which can be understood as a capillary. Therefore, in the case of the same liquid (such as water) and the same pressure, as long as the liquid column height of the capillary is less than the length of the capillary, it can ensure that the liquid will not leak out.   Therefore, the water insulation of the thin film directly depends on the pore size and path length of the breathable film. This performance is usually measured by the water resistance (ΔP), when the water pressure exceeds the resistance the water pressure resistance value that the microporous film can withstand, the water will leak out.   According to the above capillary principle, the water pressure resistance of the microporous film can be replaced by capillary penetration pressure ΔP, which can be expressed as follows:   ΔP = 2σcosα/d   Among them: ΔP means penetration pressure (Pa) σ means surface tension (N/m) α means contact angle (degree) d means capillary diameter   It can be seen that different pore diameters and film thicknesses can be designed to meet the safety requirements of water pressure resistance. Obviously, the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) requirement can also be achieved by changing the micropore diameter and micropore density of the breathable film.   For the breathable film used in personal hygiene products, the principle of improving the breathable property of the film must be followed under the premise of ensuring safety (ΔP value).

The most commonly used breathable film with PE as the carrier

    2023-07-12

The most commonly used breathable film with PE as the carrier   The principle of air permeability: inorganic material + tensile = micropores, but only the appropriate size and uniform distribution of micropores are effective.   Basic film forming principle: PE+CaCO3 (masterbatch) -- film forming -- stretch -- breathable film   PE breathable film is in LDPE/LLDPE polyethylene resin carrier, adding about 50% of special calcium carbonate for mixing, it's made by directional stretching at a certain rate after extrusion into a film. Since polyethylene resin is a thermoplastic plastic material, it can be stretched and crystallized under certain conditions. When stretched, the interface between the polymer and the calcium carbonate particles is stripped, and the interconnected pores or channels are formed around the calcium carbonate particles. It is these pores and channels that give the film a breathable (wet) function.

    What is breathable film?

    2023-07-11

What is breathable film?   Breathable film is a kind of environmental protection breathable (vapor) water (liquid, bacteria, dust) functional material. The emergence of microporous breathable film has a history of more than 20 years, and has been rapidly developed in the past 10 years.   The breathable film is the necessary material for the diaper. The diaper structure is divided into 3 layers: top sheet, absorption core layer and back sheet.   The top sheet of diapers is made of non-woven fabric, the absorption core layer is a polymer absorbent resin and fluff pulp, and the back sheet material is mainly made of PE film or PE film + non-woven fabric, the main purpose of PE breathable bottom film is to prevent urine leakage.   Polyolefin breathable film, which is prepared by adding inert filler to PE or PP carrier, is made by film making and stretching. And use for personal hygiene care products. Breathable film is an upgrade of ordinary waterproof film. Breathable film and ordinary film can not be replaced simply, whether the structural design of the final product is reasonable or not is crucial to the embodiment of the permeability effect of the breathable film!   The so-called breathable film is a functional inorganic product uniformly added into the polyolefin raw material, the product in the film formation process due to high tensile pores, so that it has the function of air permeability and moisture conduction. In short, the function of the breathable film is water insulation, breathable (moisture).
