What’s the fluorescent whitening agent?

Does sanitary napkins contain fluorescent whitening agents?

Fluorescent whitening agents are a type of organic compounds that can absorb ultraviolet light and emit blue or blue purple fluorescence. The production process of sanitary napkins does not require the addition of fluorescent whitening agents, and various raw materials used in the production of sanitary napkins, such as fluff pulp and non-woven fabrics, also do not require the addition of fluorescent whitening agents.

If the sanitary napkin is placed under a UV lamp for illumination, it is possible to see fluorescence, and fluorescence does not mean the addition of a fluorescent whitening agent. Substances that emit fluorescence are commonly found in nature, and the most common ones, such as fireflies, shrimp, and crabs, all emit fluorescence. Many common foods such as soy sauce, Pu'er tea, Baijiu, black tea and other fermented foods also have fluorescence.

Some raw materials in sanitary napkins, such as adhesives, emit fluorescence themselves, which does not mean that fluorescent whitening agents are added, let alone are harmful to the human body. According to standards such as GB/T8939-2018 "Sanitary Napkins (Pads)" and GB/T39391-2020 "Women's Sanitary Pants", products must not contain transferable fluorescent substances. As long as they pass the testing according to relevant national standards, they are safe.
